Activated carbon method can effectively absorb mercury from various industrial waste waters. Some factories in China have used this method to treat mercury-containing waste water. However, this method is only applicable to the treatment of low-concentration mercury-containing waste water. When the concentration of mercury in wastewater is high, first-level treatment can be carried out to reduce the concentration of mercury in the wastewater and then adsorbed by activated carbon. The wastewater containing mercury in an amount of 1 to 2 mg/L passes through an activated carbon filter, and the mercury content in the discharged water can be reduced to 0.01 to 0.05 mg/L. After the mercury is recovered, the activated carbon can be regenerated and reused.
The treatment effect of activated carbon is related to many factors, including the initial form and concentration of mercury, the amount and type of activated carbon, the pH control value, and the contact time between activated carbon and wastewater containing mercury. Increasing the amount of activated carbon and increasing the contact time can increase the mercury removal rate.
